How This Organization Advances Women’s Equality:

Women for Women International provides direct support to women survivors of war through skills training, financial assistance, and community-building programs. Their work helps women regain independence, stability, and the ability to shape their own futures.

About the Organization

Women for Women International is a global nonprofit founded in 1993 during the Bosnian War, created to support women survivors of conflict in rebuilding their lives.

Their core program is a year-long initiative that provides women with vocational training, financial literacy education, and direct cash assistance, alongside emotional support and community connection.

The organization operates in some of the most fragile and conflict-affected regions in the world, working directly with women who have experienced displacement, violence, and loss.

Their approach is both practical and deeply human. It recognizes that recovery is not only about income, but also about restoring dignity, confidence, and a sense of agency.

The Problem They’re Addressing

Women in conflict zones face some of the most severe and underreported forms of inequality.

In countries like South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, ongoing violence and instability create conditions where women are disproportionately impacted:

  • High rates of sexual violence used as a weapon of war
  • Widespread displacement, leaving women without stable housing or income
  • Limited access to healthcare, education, and economic opportunities
  • Increased risk of child marriage and exploitation

In South Sudan, years of conflict and humanitarian crisis have left women facing extreme food insecurity, lack of infrastructure, and ongoing threats to safety.

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, decades of conflict have contributed to some of the highest reported rates of conflict-related sexual violence in the world.

Across these regions, women are often excluded from decision-making, cut off from financial resources, and left to rebuild families and communities with little support.

The result is a cycle where inequality is not only reinforced but intensified by conflict.

Their Work in Action

Women for Women International works directly with women survivors to help them rebuild their lives from the ground up.

Their program includes:

  • Vocational skills training to support income generation
  • Financial literacy education and direct cash assistance
  • Health and rights education, including understanding personal and legal rights
  • Community-building, connecting women with peer support networks

Participants graduate with practical tools, savings, and a support system that helps them move toward long-term stability.

The organization has supported hundreds of thousands of women globally, many of whom go on to start businesses, support their families, and become leaders within their communities.

This work is not just about survival. It is about restoring agency and creating pathways to independence.

Why Support is Critical Right Now

Conflict and instability continue to affect millions of women worldwide.

In regions like South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo:

  • Humanitarian needs remain high due to ongoing violence and displacement
  • Economic opportunities are limited, especially for women
  • Access to healthcare, education, and basic services is inconsistent

At the same time, global humanitarian funding often falls short of meeting the full scale of need.

Women are frequently the backbone of recovery in these regions, yet they are the least resourced.

Organizations like Women for Women International are working to change that by investing directly in women, but sustained support is essential to continue and expand this work.

Why Every Woman is Worthy Supports This Work

At Every Woman is Worthy®, we believe that women’s equality must include women everywhere, especially those facing the most extreme conditions.

In conflict zones, women are not only surviving. They are rebuilding families, communities, and economies, often without recognition or support.

Organizations like Women for Women International are investing directly in these women, providing the tools and resources needed to move from survival to stability.

Supporting this work means recognizing that equality is global, and that women in the most vulnerable situations deserve access to opportunity, dignity, and independence.

How to Support

Sharing their work also helps bring visibility to women whose stories are too often overlooked.
